SEGA's Sonic Origins was announced a while back and it's finally coming to fruition, and as a slap in the face for some. Sonic Origins is a collection of the first three Master System/Genesis games with Knuckles and Sonic CD included. In theory, this would be a great idea if priced reasonable but SEGA does what Nintendo does.

Above is a shot of the current DLC pricing for the series. If you're wanting just for the core games, you're in luck but it's still not cheap at $39.99 USD for the standard edition. The digital deluxe is $44.99 USD which includes almost all of the other content minus the letterbox background DLC, mirror mode and some bonus coins.

To top this news, it looks like any chance of getting a physical copy is not happening unless Limited Run Games or Special Reserved Games gets the license to print.
DryvByhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01568969296921010415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2172486141856813459.post-1568662314159250922022-04-04T21:02:00.007-04:002022-04-04T21:02:44.789-04:00Return To Monkey Island Announced With Ron Gilbert
The original creator of the Monkey Island series (as well as other amazing LucasArts adventures from the 90s) is bringing the series back to life and it's coming in 2022 under the title Return to Monkey Island. Ron Gilbert's last game, Thimblewood Park, was a fantastic game with graphics from the era of Maniac Mansion while combining comedy with a really interesting mystery. Ron Gilbert still has it!

Devolver Digital along with LucasArts and Ron's own company Terrible Toybox are publishing the game and have so far only revealed the announcement trailer. Let's hope this game brings it real old school and brings it to physical format too.

If you're not in a situation where you can check-in, offline is even disabled making this another service games thanks to DRM.

https://twitter.com/DoesItPlay1/status/1483126058325090304

Once again, software piracy will be the only way to preserve this remaster if you decide to play it after they shut down their servers unless they patch this kind of trash out of the game.

Diablo II's remaster has a lot of highs and some major blows to it, one being the removal of TCP/IP direct connects for people that prefer modding a game to play. It also doesn't have any crossplay support or console mouse and keyboard support. With this DRM, it's a total disgrace to preserving games for those who enjoy revisiting games they paid for.

He admitted this was be a difficult task but hopes to see it someday. In other words, if you're banned from your Xbox account for whatever reason, you lose access to your PlayStation, Nintendo, Steam accounts or ability to play online. And if he can't get that, he hopes to see a ban list that will follow around his account to keep from playing with certain people.

What a nightmare and very dystopian thing to want. And what a flat out idiotic thing to want. It's further proof making a lot of money and being a head piece of a major company doesn't mean your ideas are good. Since I don't work for you, Phil, I don't have to kiss your butt like your co-workers. I can explain why your proposal is simply stupid and not well thought out.

Lets say you have an old Xbox account but don't care about Xbox. You don't even remember your login credentials anymore. A year later, someone hacks the account and starts charging up things on a stolen credit card. The account is banned. The One Network Society decides to ban you from your Steam account.

Or let's say you have your PlayStation account name as IHateTrump45 or LetsGoBrandon46 and PlayStation decides they don't like insults to a world leader. You're banned from their network for an offensive name. Now you can't load your Xbox and switch over there. But that can't happen, right?

Who would want any of this? And how would that system work in his fantasy land? I could just make a different name per platform, which a lot of people do (almost all of my friends use different names across platforms). They use different emails, I even do that. So, Phil, how would this stupid fantasy work in your perfect world?

Purchase Deathloop on Amazon

Deathloop had such an advertisement blitz that it turned a lot of people off to the game. And then when mainstream reviewers were all giving it perfect scores, it didn't help those already puking their guts out over their 5th YouTube ad during a 10 minute video. With all this said and done, I was fortunate enough to miss these ads completely and picked it up rather quickly after release on the PlayStation 5. I'm not sure what the ads were showing that was turning people off but my experience with Arkane's newest title was really enjoyable.

Deathloop is about a drunk guy named Cole who wakes up on the same beach and relives the same day over and over again like he's Bill Murray from Groundhog's Day. The slight alteration to this formula is that Cole also has no idea how he got here and why he's hearing voices of a woman named Julianna. His entire existence rests on escaping this weird island known as Blackreef and also murdering Julianna for reasons he's not sure of.

The story concept alone is terrific and works really well. Every day is split into four different sections of the island at four different times of the day: morning, noon, afternoon and evening. As the day progresses, certain events and battles are unobtainable until you restart the day and try again. The world builds itself throughout the day each day so certain paths will open or close based on the time of day you choose to go. This makes a lot of sense pretty quickly in the game as you find clues hidden around the island that give you a path on where to go next. The more clues you uncover, the more successful a loop will be. This concept is really amazing and well executed however it has a downfall which we'll cover in detail later. But it really begins to affect the challenge of the game before long.

After a while, Julianna will be introduced into the gameplay as she tries to hunt you down and close down pathways to escape a map. The unique thing about her is she's either a bot or a real life player depending on how you have your options set up for her. Her ability to blend into the map using stealth or wearing a disguise is great. Playing as Julianna is a blast for someone like me. You just wait for your prey to fall into your traps and unload on Cole. If Cole dies three times, he's out of there and you win. It's a really simple addition and not entirely unique to gaming but it fits the flow of this game really well.

I love guns, real guns and fake guns. Deathloop has some really fun guns to play around with and trinkets to find to make them even better. One of the guns you'll get is a dual welding pistol that can be converted into a machine gun for it's alt fire by putting both guns together. Unique weapons are specific to certain quests or locations and they're all really fun to use. The game has silenced pistols, loud shotguns, heavy machine guns, and rifles that make the enemy fly across the map. All of them are useless when you master the power of the boot. Cole can kick butt and chew bubble gum.

When you get through a few loops with a few good items, the difficulty takes a nose dive. They really should have put in a difficulty mode to make the game more challenging because being able to walk up to everyone and just kick them to death made the game too easy. A quick way to kill almost everyone is to kick them down and then stomp on their head. That will kill everyone, including the bosses. Even during Julianna fights, I just ended up kicking her down and kicking her to death. But even without that, Cole is vastly over powered compared to anyone in the game. The stealth is way too easy. You don't need to even hide in shadows to hide. One mission you need to assassinate a Visionary at his party and I was standing on a box about a foot above his vision. He didn't see me. You'll always feel like you're playing the game on easy with cheats on and that's one of the few problems Deathloop has.

Abilities don't really help the difficulty too. One of the most difficult achievements/trophies has you finish an entire day loop killing only the Visionaries and not being seen by the enemy. In another game, this would be a very frustrating task but in Deathloop you have so many over powering abilities it makes it a cake walk. You can indefinitely turn into a stealth object and lure enemies away or just transport yourself around the map. These abilities are actually a lot of fun to play with but they almost make the game almost too easy.

If that doesn't make it sound overly easy, the AI is really bad. It's probably the worst AI I've seen in a video game as of late. The AI can lose trace of you rather quickly and if they're not losing you, they utterly suck and hunting you down. When they hit you, you take a lot of damage and can die quickly but they're slow to draw and slow to react. In my entire run with bosses and all, I may have only died a dozen times and that was learning mechanics and running through a map to get through it.

When you die or reset the day, all of the weapons, abilities and trinkets you've collected die along with you which would really suck if they didn't introduce a way to infuse your inventory before you decide to wake up drunk on the beach again. Infusions are introduced fairly early in the game but you'll need to make some tough choices at the end of each loop. Do you want to keep all the character upgrades you found or weapons? You'll be limited by the number of Residuum that you've obtained during a loop. You get this by killing Visionaries (the in-game bosses you'll assassinate), finding them on glowing objects around the map, or by sacrificing the items you don't need.

Now that we know some mechanics, what exactly is the game all about? It's essentially Hitman meets Dishonored. You're main objective is to assassinate all of the Visionaries in one day and escape the island. You can't do this on your first run through so the clue process is where you piece together exactly the way you can accomplish this. The maps are decently sized and packed with stuff to explore but overall the game is incredibly linear. You're going to checkpoints and knocking out missions for each map until a pathway opens up in the menu for you to do this. This isn't a knock on the game. When it clicks exactly how you're going to do everything, it's a heck of a good time running through it. You can knock the game out in about 8 hours and the issue with that is that when the game is over, it's over. There's not a lot of side stuff to do unless you just want to try for all the achievements or trophies. And after so many runs during the end game, the radio chatter between Cole and Julianna ends so it's just a lonesome game.

Playing on the PlayStation 5, I didn't run into graphic hiccups or audio issues. The options menu lets you choose between performance or graphic fidelity with and without ray tracing. I tried them all and I prefer the performance. You're not missing out on too much in the graphic department going with performance. The game doesn't have pop in textures, graphical errors or any frame rate issues. It has a nice mix of a dystopia 60s with the feel of a No One Lives Forever vibe. Even better is the sound. The 3D audio is really good and held me in place at a few locations just listening to the sounds. One particular time of day has a rock concert where a bunch of enemies are focused on the stage. I stealthed through this area and enjoyed the looping music myself. Voice acting is great but be ready to be bombarded by f-bombs right out of the gate. It's odd that it hammers them home for the first couple of hours but lets up after that.

As of writing this, the game still has some technical issues. I've had it crash more than a handful of times in the 20 hours I've invested into it. One time was during a boss run where I spent a good 20 minutes sneaking around to get a weapon only to have it crash when trying to enter the escape area. It's amazing that launch day reviews could hand out perfect reviews when there's some pretty big issues with the game. It's a fun, short game but that's about it. When it's over, it's over and it's hard to be excited about doing everyone over and over again when the game is so easy to play. Do I recommend it? Absolutely but I'd wait until a sales price for a game you'll finish over a weekend.

From Tim Schafer's adventure games to dark offensive humorous games like Postal, comedy is a sure way to keep me playing. In the case of Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust, the comedy is the only thing that kept me going. If you're familiar with the series, it's usually a point-and-click adventure game where you try and get Larry to score with some ladies. They ditched the point-and-click for more of an action-adventure and it's a rough transition.

Larry Lovage gets hired by his uncle Larry Laffer (the original protagonist from the series) as an assistant at Laffer Studios, a movie studio that Laffer owns making possibly NC-17 content. Laffer is looking for a mole within the studio and hires his nephew for the job. Lovage starts as a low-end maintenance worker and moves up the ranks at the studio, even staring in some of the films they're working on. Being Larry Lovage and in this series, Larry has a side objective to score big with some of the ladies around the studio.

Box Office Break was written by Allen Covert (Grandma's Boy) and has a pretty good cast of Hollywood actors, which I guess is what happened to the budget to fix this game up. The cast features Josh Keaton, Jeffrey Tambor, Jay Mohr, Patrick Warburton, Shannon Elizabeth , Carmen Electra, Artie Lange and Dave Attell. Keeping this in mind, this game is fairly decent quality for a 2000s comedy on it's own. I laughed quite a few times at the jokes, the parodies, and the high school humor. If you're a fan of cheesy raunchy comedies with lots of innuendo, the script is surprisingly funny and the only reason I kept playing through it.

But outside of the story, just about everything else is poorly done. I didn't have any positive gameplay experiences, which for some of you will be the end of this review. We play games to play them, not watch an entertaining movie. This game fails completely as a game. It's hard to even label what genre this game is as it's just a mix of a bunch of different gameplay games in a sandbox setting. One minute you're platforming looking for missing movie scripts and the next minute you're fist fighting your way through lot security. And almost every one of those mechanics feels broken.

The core of your gameplay experience is driving around a lot, doing missions for various characters in a decently sized world for it's time. Most of your time spent will be driving from point A to point B with a very generous time limit, fist fighting guards, or platforming up movie sets for an objective piece. Midway through the game, Lovage falls asleep and it able to enter a dream universe where you'll play through a specific movie theme with different types of game modes such as shoot outs or escort missions. The problem with a lot of the gameplay is just as I stated above: they feel broken. For instance the combat mechanics. Punching someone doesn't ever feel like it connects and the damage you take or give is random without any gratification of fighting. It just feels like the combat was programmed with a random number generator. You just have to hope you can complete theses segments so you don't have to do them again. There's a timing to combat, which doesn't feel natural and it's hard to tell when you're doing it right. The idea is to punch and pause for a second to do a combo but it doesn't always work. I failed missions so many times from random physics knocking me on the ground and a security guard ends up anti-juggling me or failing from not being able to connect punches to people right next to me. At least there's not many combat segments but when you run into them it's a good while before you can pass them without luck.

Platforming wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the awful camera. We're talking early 90s 3D platformer cameras. The best way to describe my experience is the moment you need to see where you're jumping, the camera decides to use it's "flush" function and spin around like it's taking a trip down a toilet. I'm certain this game has a high chance of killing anyone with epileptic seizures from the camera alone. There's some other issues with the platforming such as wall jumping not registering correctly, but the camera is the biggest stink. Several times I would climb an area and have the camera spin so much that Lovage would jump completely sideways and off the side of a structure. Even the fall damage is a bit broken. Randomly I can fall off the side of a building and take somewhere around 5% damage. Then a smaller fall may cause me to almost die.

When I first entered the cowboy theme in a dream sequence, I was hoping the new gameplay modes would be a bit more exciting but it was just shoot outs and poorly designed stealth missions where you control like a drunk character. The shoot outs were annoying since the turn speed for your gun during a more rail shooter sequence was at a literal crawl. I actually died several times waiting for my aim cursor to move to enemies. It's not a fun experience.

Their horror theme has Lovage in the Michael Jackson "Thriller" attire while you do a whole bunch of crap no one cares about. This is the time they introduce an escort mission. The escort mission is pretty easy. I think you'd have to have be firing off at a third of your brain's cylinders to mess it up. A Freddy Kruger looking character chases some bikini girls while they head to their camp and you have to stop him while escorting the girls to their log cabins. Kruger's scared of fire so as a Michael Jackson parody, what do you do? You catch your hair on fire and follow the girl while she bounces off to her cabin. I told you the game is funny.

Now that I'm writing this stuff out, I'm beginning to believe I'm some kind of masochist for getting a Platinum trophy in this game.

The graphics are pretty bad and I'm judging this honestly with eyes from the time it came out. What makes them bad isn't the texture quality. I actually thought the textures for an old game were detailed (when the loaded) and looked really nice. The issue with the graphics are most of the character models, animations, and the frame rate. Women are mostly over the top busty, and not like a Lucy Pinder or Anri Okita busty. They're more bimbo-fied than a woman with large watermelon for boobs. Artistic decision and all, it just looks really bad and every female is designed like this. I'm not calling this out as sexism as much as just saying they just don't look good (see below). The women look flat out ugly and just have a big set of boobs hanging out that are bigger than their heads.

Then there's the frame rate issue which pops up frequently. The frame rate doesn't dip into single digits from what I could tell but it's all over the place and causes issues while driving or platforming. It doesn't make sense. Driving down a normal road will cause stuttering and dips in performance. Then a more crowded area ends up being less of an issue once it pops all the textures and geometry into place.

The main game clocks in around 6-8 hours and there's a few side quests to keep you busy if you want to suffer some more. The side quests include racing around the studio within a time limit, finishing side quests for women to lead them to your trailer of love, or collecting Larry trophies. As you can tell, none of them are worth explaining more than that. The game is a total barf bag package.

Surprisingly, the game didn't crash once on my PlayStation 3. I have to give them props for that since as pathetic as this game is, it didn't have any major issues with shutting down or locking up. The story holds up if you enjoy anything parody and the American Pie movies, but if you want to play a game that's fun and functional, you're better off just re-reading this review.

The one odd thing about this marketing promo is the ad is only valid until June 19th. Maybe that's to get people quick credits on this week's Nintendo E3 announcement?

Nintendo naming their products something a little goofy isn't unlike them. Slapping "New" on the front seems very Nintendo. In fact, the latest Pokémon Snap has the word New on the front of it. They're only slightly better than Microsoft when it comes to naming products.

Forbes has a bit more info if you'd like to read more.

Pathetic.

The name Rainbow Six may have you believe you'll be saving a nation from terrorists as Tom Clancy intended but in extraction, you'll be joining a team and laying waste to aliens and zombies. This mode was teased a few years back in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege as a special mode and with it's success, this was created.

I don't know how I feel about it so far. Maybe I can't detach the Tom Clancy and Rainbow Six from the title to give it a fair shake, but I'm not jumping up and down for this one. But that may change once I get to try it out.

On a very positive note, the game features 3 player co-op with cross-save and cross-play on launch across all of it's release platforms which include PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series / One X, and PC. Well, PC except the most popular storefront: Steam.

You can pre-order here. And if you want to dive into the types of achievements and trophies it'll have, enjoy this list that's already up.

It's the Nintendo/Ubisoft answer to the popular XCOM turn-based strategy series but instead of fighting typical sci-fi aliens, you fight Mario themed Rabbids.

We haven't reviewed the game on this site as of yet but if you want a preview of my thoughts: Five D-Pads out of Five.

Nintendo has announced that this series is getting a sequel on the Nintendo Switch and will be available sometime in 2022. The game is currently available for pre-order for $59.99 in US bucks.

R. Martin. At this point in time, Janurary 21, 2022 is their expected release date on PC, PlayStation 4/5, and Xbox One / Series consoles.

The trailer showcases horse back riding which is new to these types of games. While not an entire lot is known about the overall game outside of general ideas, it looks like it's more of what Demon's/Dark Souls fans expect out of modern FromSoftware titles and includes a co-op mode similar to those games as well.

For now, we can enjoy this awesome trailer below and check the details of the official Elder Ring website.

Let's travel back in time to the 80s and 90s when being a kid meant Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle consumption was making us fat in entertainment. Dotemu (Windjammers 2 and Streets of Rage 4) and Tribute Games (Mercenary Kings) is bringing a new beat-em-up featuring the four turtles we love so much. Instead of forcing 3D graphics into the scene, they went right for the nostalgic heartstrings with 2D pixel art work and the original 1987 animated show characters.

Shredder's Revenge will be a four player co-op brawler that already is getting some things right: couch co-op and online co-op. Let's hope they announce cross-play which was the only disappointing thing in Windjammers 2 and Streets of Rage 4 for me. One thing about both developers is they know their stuff. If you played any of their retro inspired games, you can tell these are fans making the games and not just dead shells of nostalgia milking us gen X and millennial types of our hard-earned McDollars.

If you're not a fan of turtle green, you'll also be able to kick booty as April O'Neil, Master Splinter and hopefully Casey Jones. The developers have confirmed they'll be adding a lot more gameplay enhancements and modes to the game with nothing fully confirmed yet.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge is coming to PC stores like Steam and more than likely PlayStation, Xbox and Switch in 2021. Let's hope this one rocks, dudes!

I primarily play on PlayStation and PC, my dad and brother are on Xbox, and I have a few scattered friends on the Switch and PC. When cross-play first hit and we experienced it as a group, it was one of the best innovations to online gaming since consoles went online. But with that not ever game supports cross-play and finding complete lists are a bit tricky on the internet sometimes.

Below is a list of games that currently support cross-play and with which systems. I've organized them from full cross-play to minimum cross-play. If anything is missing, leave a comment below.

Full Cross-Play Support

These games support cross-play with the open arms and play nice between PC and consoles alike. These are the best kinds of multiplayer games. In this installment, Windows will return to their old look featuring start-up screens, bland grey taskbars, Internet Explorer, drivers that rarely work, pixelated system fonts and reintroducing the Channel Guide with support from Disney+. Of course the new-old Windows wouldn't be complete without the introduction of new and improved viruses to cripple your system and steal your data. Gates commented they wanted to return us to the "new normal".

Since last year, the entire world has been invested in one way or another with a virus known as Covid-19 which Gates has finally unveiled Covid-19 was an actual plan-demic. According to Gates, Covid-19 was their best marketing campaign since Windows CE-ME-NT. "We used to use TV for ads, but people flipped the channel. Magazines became a thing of the past and statistics show most users are using adblocks. What better way to bring attention to our latest product than to produce Covid-19 and then unveil our cure which is Windows-19?"

Bill Gates (middle) with fellow investors, Deaf Epsteam (left) and Angree Baldhead (right).

However, some users on Twitter are already taking issue with Bill Gates over 2020s pandemic by calling this marketing campaign "irresponsible" and "dangerous". Gates said he knew there would be some controversy but with social media, it would spread like wildfire if big enough through controversy, conspiracy and worry.

"This entire world operates best in a worried state of mind. The focus gravitates towards that worry. If marketing isn't grabbing world wide attention, it's not doing it's job," said Gates eating a popsicle.

Former President Trump said he knew Gates was responsible the whole time. "He's a terrific salesman. Many people have told me, many people have said in private and in public, Bill Gates is a mad man when it comes to sales. When he came to me, I knew this was huge. This was the biggest. I knew it all along." President Biden commented as well stating "Where am I? This is not my beautiful house. This is not my beautiful wife."

You may have never heard of this X-Men action RPG game from Silicon Knights and why is that? Is it too astonishing? Is it too incredible? The simple answer is no. The longer answer is revealed within the words of this review.

I sometimes suffer from a rare mental disorder called gaming masochism. It's when I look at the worst games I own (or could own) and play them until I can't take it anymore. The guys at Mystery Science Theater 3000 and RiffTrax have a similar brain malfunction but with movies. I've played quite a few insufferable games in my past, but usually not to completion. And I'm certainly not finishing them more than once. What made me desire to suffer agonizing, hellish pain? One was for this review and another was so I could have my 161st Platinum trophy as "Homo Superior". But there's nothing superior about X-Men: Destiny except that a team of developers were paid by Activision to make this.

X-Men: Destiny gives you a character selection choice between three newly designed X-Men that can be summed up as Density Man (the power to punch hard), Shadow Man (the power to move quickly), and Energy Woman (the power to copy Jubilee from the real X-Men). Throughout the game, you'll hit the same combination of keys through color variants of the same few enemies for 4 to 6 hours. Every now and again, a meter will charge up which allows you to use one of a very few skills that practically do nothing of great important until the end game.

As mentioned before, X-Men: Destiny is an action role-playing game with standard XP, loot (or X-Genes), and a skill tree for your selected mutant. Yet somehow this game manages to miss the mark with making a decently fun RPG in the X-Men universe. I mention there's loot but really it's just a set of unlocks for doing activities. If you help Juggernaut in a challenge, you get his boots. If you find the clearly not-so-hidden white flashy object on your way through the linear mazes, you'll get some costume or junk collectible. All of them are just generic skill points that hardly affect the gameplay. I couldn't tell a difference between any of them the entire three times I finished this heap of a game. The skill tree isn't truly a skill tree as much as a way to show you which abilities you've unlocked during your cursed journey. By the end of the game, you'll get your ultimate special which is the only good way to play the game since it makes everything so incredibly effortless you could accidentally drop the controller and kill everything on the screen.

Outside of the combat, you run around a crime infested, half-ruined San Francisco not too alien from today's poop filled streets of San Francisco. You run from point A to point B until the chapter ends. And in between that pathway, you get to fight a few waves of enemies and listen to the crappy story that doesn't interest anyone (thanks, Mark Carey). Sometimes you'll get to do a side mission for certain X-Men or the Brotherhood fiends which consists of you loading into a small battle arena, punching about 30 or more guys and being rewarded with "Mission Complete" and a maybe some new threads. And that's about all there is to the game. It's so monotonous that it even informs you when you've entered a combat area and how many enemies are left.

If the game featured some form of multi-player, I might have had some fun with it. Drunken fun. But it couldn't even be bothered with anything interesting.

Sometimes games have snappy mechanics to help guide the player on rails to get from point A to point B. In X-Men: Destiny, they avoid those useful mechanics. Jumping on a railing to climb up a wall sometimes became the most infuriating part of the experience because randomly he wouldn't jump up towards the new platform. He would jump up and toward the camera so I'd fall off the side of a ledge. Of all the goofy things I ran into, this annoyance happened very frequently. Towards chapter 6 you're forced to climb a lot of obstacles and I would spend half my time recovering from a fall. It's a good way to end up rage quitting the game is you managed to make it half way through.

On the hardest difficulty, I must have died 20-30 times from shots I couldn't trace to who they came from or where. There's no indication you've been hit a lot of the times. I couldn't tell if that was a glitch or a feature.

The bosses are all over the place too. There's a couple of them that I had fun fighting against and it's because they kept the challenges interesting enough. You might be fighting a giant beast that you need to figure out his attack patterns to learn the dodges, or you might fight a guy that runs faster than the framerate allows and hits you a couple of times until you've died. The trick in all the boss fights is to quit the game and play something else.

I've played through this game three times and I barely remember what happened because it's not only an unfun game, it's an even more uninteresting game. But after reading some wiki articles for jogging the noggin, I can give you a brief break down and then tell you why it's a mess.

Professor X is dead and San Francisco is holding a peace rally in a divided city where mutants and humans can't get along. Purifiers (which look like Antifa terrorists) attack the peaceful protest and they introduce the player to the three mutants that are unaware of their powers which are they characters you'll choose from. The Purifiers' leader, Cameron Hodge, slaps on a mech costume and the X-Men and Brotherhood of Mutants are forced to chase him around a war-torn San Francisco until he's found.

And big spoiler alert, he's eventually found after about 8 or 9 short length chapters.

This is an RPG so choices matter but they matter about as much as a TellTale Game. The only thing that really changes is the ending and some of the combat challenges since two of them rely on which faction you sided with. Ironically enough, none of the faction choices matter until you have your first encounter with Hodge. It's just another stupid system in this dumpster fire.

The story would be scored a little higher but on my second playthrough I realized how idiotic the entire storyline is. If you play as Density Man, you are a kid on a high school football team that realizes his powers when trying to save a few people from danger. Density Man runs into the X-Men during this opening attack and they have him run through the city looking for Hodge and fighting off the evil Purifiers. In the matter of minutes, your character manages to impress the X-Men so much that they have you fight the main boss with them acting as a side act. But you're an unlearned teen that discovered his powers within the hour. Either Professor X was the only thing keeping any type of sanity with the X-Men or the writing sucks.

Today's world we have PC gamers arguing over 60 frames per second and 120+ frames per second. Console gamers arguing 30 frames per second over 60 frames per second. In film, 24 frames per second is the standard. X-Men: Destiny is on another level. I don't have anything outside of my eyes and senses to explain what I experienced, but I'm pretty sure this game runs near 20 fps for the most part and dips below 10 fps at times. That's the biggest issue I have with the graphics. It's unbearable to play through this at times or watch the cutscenes because the framerate isn't keeping up with the slow pacing of the game.

If you can ignore the awful frames per second like I did, you're not trading it off for some visual wonder on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. You're trading low frame rate for low quality textures and passable character models. The textures are muddy and I swear some of the "textures" aren't even textures. Everything lacks detail outside of character models. On top of not looking good, the look of the feel repeats itself through most of the game. It's just a boring city and sewer game with minimum art work put in. Ironic coming from a comic book game. From chapter one onward, you'll experience the same color palette and the same resistance or propaganda posters on every wall; the same debris; the same busted cars. And the same very few enemies they decided to model rather that palette switch.

At the very least I can offer a positive in graphics and that goes to the design of the main characters. Most of them don't look half-bad for being a 10 year old game. And there was one boss that didn't look too bad. The problems with the characters are the animations. I mostly played with Destiny Man and his animations are hilarious in an unprofessional way. There's scenes that I felt were animated by top-notch animator for YouTube, Really3D.

The music is forgettable and the sounds are repetitive. The real reason I liked the sounds more than almost everything else is that some of the voice acting wasn't complete utter crap. It's the most enjoyable part of the experience. So, bravo sound team! Gambit sounded like he was from Louisiana and that's winning you the golden trophy for this turd.

There was a point of playing this I thought I was having fun. It's when I first launched the game and was entertained by the first brief level. It was simple, but I was running into familiar X-Men faces. My brain raced with the ideas of where this brawler RPG would take me and that gave me some joy is my now defeated heart.

No, I didn't have a lot of fun playing this at all. I can play old games and still find a lot of interesting ideas behind them, even take in the graphics and sounds from the day, and suffer through some older gameplay mechanics. But even for it's time, X-Men: Destiny would have rated the same for me. It's a generic brawler with X-Men slapped on the cover. Did the marketing work? I bought it so I'd say so. Do I regret it? As a gamer with somewhat limited time I do, but as as gaming masochist, not at all. It was a fun heaping of brain melt that I could write a ranting review about.

If I had one solid thing to say about it I can say that the game never once crashed. It's a frustrating experience to play through this game but if you want to be "Homo Superior" you just keep trucking on.

Oh, and if you want to hear a great piece of gaming history about this game, read about the Epic Games and Silicon Knights lawsuit. It may be an official Blizzard product with the Diablo name slapped on the box with some of the familiarities of the Diablo games, but it's not a quintessence Diablo game. There are several problems with the game (some nitpicky issues, sure) and some very major problems with the spirit of what makes a Diablo game truly a Diablo game. This isn't to say that Diablo III isn't a great game. In fact, my review for the game is full of praise and that's even with vanilla Diablo III. But that doesn't mean I believe it's a true Diablo game.

To better understand this opinion, consider other popular franchises which have a similar problem within their own line of products. There's a lot of Star Wars fans that don't consider the sequel trilogy to be a part of the Star Wars universe, because of how fundamentally different they feel. Mark Hamill even felt betrayed by the new trilogy and stated that he didn't feel they did Luke Skywalker justice. Disney changed so much of what Star Wars meant to its original fan base that it's practically excommunicated within communities. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is so drastically different from a typical Zelda game that parts of that community are split on calling it a true Zelda game. Quake is a franchise that has six games under their belt. Fans of the original seem to hate the transformation into a space alien shooter from its roots as a demonic gothic shooter.

Why's any of this important? Because while each of those examples are a part of their official series, they feel like different games from a setting and game play standpoint. Each product has a "spirit" that's either expanded upon or separated from. In Diablo's case, Diablo III is so fundamentally different from the previous two games that it's hard to say they're even on the same playing field.

DIABLO TO DIABLO II

Diablo was the first role-playing game I ever played and I was instantly impressed with how everything felt. It was dark, scary, and extremely rewarding to find good gear after a long battle. Plus, it was a great LAN party game. The first time we went down a couple of floors of the desolate dungeon and stumbled into the room where the Butcher was eating human carcasses, it was a terrifying experience. You died. You lost your nerve and had to steel yourself to that point again to gather your belongings and hope you could defeat the demonic being.

Diablo II expanded on what made the original title so amazing. Instead of traveling down levels of dungeons that are separated into entirely different atmospheres with different evils lurking, Diablo II went in a horizontal direction and created Acts which replaced the different looks and layouts deep in the dungeons of the original Diablo. Loot was expanded upon with more variety and abilities. Characters were added to the game that expanded the gameplay from being cookie cutter wizards and warriors to a range of holy knights to dark necromancers. The game also increased the difficulty by adding more variations in monsters and their resistances and elemental damage. The sequel feels like a natural progression to the first game similar to how Super Mario Bros. 3 progressed Super Mario Bros.

With the Lord of Destruction expansion for Diablo II, it took things to another level and improved on the formula even more by adding another Act to the game, adding two new characters, new bosses and including improvements to the loot by adding runewords as something to seek out. But the core gameplay still remained the same and the spirit of the game was very much the same.

In both games, you're exploring a gothic medieval setting that jumps from the pages of Dante's Inferno or classic Christian literature of how people imagined demons and devils. The chess game of good and evil was on display and while there are many evils in these worlds, your good and holiness shined and outweighed any and all obstacles. The lore is wrapped around this concept and it's just about the end times. It borrows heavily from Catholic gothic literature and keeps that theme throughout, even though things like magic and necromancy would never be an acceptable form of fighting evil. That's where the fantasy comes into play and is similar to Lord of the Rings or Chronicles of Narnia.

When Diablo III hit the scene, most of this changed, not only from a gameplay aspect, but the setting and spirit of the game completely changed. The game went from gothic medieval fantasy to dark high fantasy. The tone changed from a disturbing evil to a sort of anime/cartoonish evil. The chess board was overturned and apparently God is on vacation while ultimate evil takes over the physical and spiritual worlds. And the entire gameplay element goes from being a role-playing game to a slot machine where nothing really matters except big numbers and incremental upgrades.

ISSUE NO. 1: SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

Diablo and Diablo II focus heavily on skills and attribute points, both giving you a wide range of character builds and strategies. If you want to make a leaping frog whirlwind tank, that's perfectly acceptable and if you're skilled enough as a player, you can be successful. You can contribute more of your stat points into strength as a wizard if you want because that freedom is available to you since these are role-playing games.

Diablo III completely squashes all freedom you had by simplifying the entire system. Attribute points are now automatically applied after each level gained.
Skills are progressively unlocked and can be changed out on the fly.
This dramatic change in the way skills are managed radically changes
the core mechanic of role playing games. Being able to quickly change
skills with no punishment removes the risks inherent to experimenting
with builds. A better method to reset skills might have been to pay someone to reset them or find a tomb that gives you that ability. But instead they went with the more arcade and simplified method of doing so which is never punish players for not paying attention to their skills.

Why would any of this matter? Because Diablo games were always about risk and reward. Diablo III takes out all the guess work and focuses more on "perfect builds" instead of the ability to customize a build to suit your play style. There's really no point of testing out the waters yourself with your own build or own playstyle because the pre-determined calculated styles of someone else are always better for the end game content in Diablo III. It went back two steps to make the game easier for new comers and streamline the hand holding of how skills and stats work in a typical RPG. Instead of playing a game where you know your skills and their abilities, you're focused more on setting up the perfect numbers game of pressing 1-4 (or all buttons on your controller) in order to pull of big splashy number damage. The entire skill system is dumbed down for the casual experience and to bring in their World of Warcraft crowd..

In Diablo II, you had specific gear and skills for each act because it wasn't about damage to all that mattered. Some enemies were immune to certain types of attacks and you had to prepare for those battles. You have gear with certain elemental damage that really hurts certain types of enemies and helps you in your playthrough, but you weren't sticking with that gear alone because it's not possible to play on the higher difficulties with the same elementals. You also had to wear appropriate armor for battle. You didn't want to walk into a battle where fire damage was the main element and be resistant to something else. You'd more than likely die.

In Diablo III, you can just become a lightning based hammer throwing crusader and kill everyone because everything is destructible to everything without any immunities. Honestly it's fun to just wreck house without any consequence but that's where it loses it touch with its roots. It's not an improvement on the previous systems; it's a removal and a big removal that puts the focus on being easy and accessible to all rather than rewarding someone who invests the time into learning their character and their foe. They also took away any real reason to focus on changing gear and preparing before battle. Instead, you just look for the highest resist all armor because resist all is king in the game. The only real challenge in Diablo III is being caught in a series of rotating energy beams that drain damage.

The number one biggest change is one of the biggest reasons Diablo III feels like a clone with the Diablo name slapped onto it. It's more akin to old console action role-playing games like Dark Alliance or Gauntlet Legends rather than a true Diablo game where choices matter and freedom is king.

NO. 2: LOOT

If you want dopamine hits and to check those ADD check boxes, Diablo III is the most rewarding game of all time in terms of loot. It's as if Santa Claus rains down presents every 15 minutes with bright a glowing orange item on the ground. This is a lot of fun to change your gear out constantly but the loot is so diluted in it's current state that the fun of finding a set item or a legendary item is meaningless. You end up wanting a few extra tiers of item rarity just so there's something exciting when it drops. Most importantly, it's a big step back from what made Diablo fun. Getting a rare item and having it be rare is rewarding. But Diablo III isn't like the other games. It's focus is splashing bigger numbers at you while giving you a small incremental number to push you to the next greater rift difficulty for all eternity.

This is one thing I liked about vanilla Diablo III over it's current state. Finding a legendary or set item was such a rare experience, it felt rewarding. It was exciting and you couldn't wait to see how it was going to improve your experience. The way the game is now, finding loot is boring. It's so common to find legendary loot that you're left feeling uninterested after a few runs because you know for a fact how and where to get the rarest items.

Diablo III even misses the point of the loot. In the first two games, you can play the game similar to a Demon's / Dark Souls game by being completely naked. It was your skills that got you through the game, not your loot. In Diablo III, the focus on having the best loot might be tied to the root of its original loot problem: the real life auction house. It's been removed since, but the game's focus was to obtain loot to be able to play the harder difficulty levels. It's a constant carrot on a stick mechanic that isn't at all the focus on the previous games. It feels like a different game entirely when it comes to the point of loot drops.

Because the loot is so important to the core mechanics of the game, a lot of skill abilities are tied to the loot rather than the player. Instead of just getting a bow with better dexterity and using skill points to stack the abilities you want to you, you're now focused on looking for the loot that does the stacking for you. As mentioned before, you can take your armor off and still manage to run through the entire original games if you're skilled and talented enough. It's not possible to do this in Diablo III. If you're running the end game rifts and one or two pieces of important gear breaks that's key to your build, you have to repair it to continue or else you're wasting your time.

If you're not understanding why this makes Diablo III so fundamentally different from the previous games, just consider that the loot was more of a bonus than a requirement. Having different builds for different acts and different bosses was a norm and from the first game to its sequel. Diablo III wiped the slate clean and started over, removing what made Diablo's loot important to the series. It's more similar to various other action role-playing games than where it's supposed to be coming from.

ISSUE NO. 3: SETTING AND STYLE

I won't dwell too much on this as I covered most of this under the "Diablo to Diablo II" section, but as far as what makes Diablo III feel so different from its previous games is how you are exploring a world in an apocalyptic medieval state with a band of the last remaining saviors on Earth to a setting that's more full of life and world where evil just happens on the outskirts of the city (excluding Act 5 which did manage to fix some of these issues). But even in Act 5, the game has a very high fantasy style than a gothic and scary feeling of demonic presence. The monsters aren't focused on being evil and the world just isn't dark enough. The progression of the first two games had you enter a broken world and stumble into the pits of hell while Diablo III has you stumble into an overrun heaven? Imagine if a new Silent Hill came out and instead of exploring a world that's full of nightmare creatures in an abandoned city or room, you were holding a minigun mowing down criminals in New York. That's not what Silent Hill is, no matter the name.

You can tell the game was created with a different understanding of Diablo by the hidden cow level alone. In Diablo II, the hidden cow level is silly and a joke, but still maintained the darkness of the game by allowing animals to be controlled by demonic forces similar to pigs in the bible being demonically possessed. They didn't understand the joke, similar to how Rian Johnson didn't understand anything about Star Wars. They thought the joke and feel was because it was so silly and they went to the point of making a rainbow themed island full of silliness as their easter egg level and also as a way to acknowledge the fans complaints that the game has a very bright and colorful palette compared to the first two games.

The art direction also feels closer to Torchlight in this genre than Diablo. The cartoonish look and feel of everything, the polished abandoned tombs and buildings, the sleek and clean look of the overrun cities have little to no resemblance to the original games. To beat a dead horse, it's because the tone of the game changed from a gothic medieval fantasy game to a high fantasy World of Warcraft-lite game. I mean, it's so ridiculous that a colorful purple butterfly woman kills Deckard Cain right at the beginning.

And speaking of Cain, the amount of forced nostalgia they brought into the game is overwhelming. It feels like they brought a lot of these greatest hits over to remind players that this is a Diablo game, because certainly the gameplay and art direction wasn't going to do it. One of the first bosses you fight is the Skeleton King, which doesn't really make a lot of sense outside of the nostalgia. Same with the Butcher, which is another boss that they couldn't truly nail. It doesn't make any sense to kill the Butcher as he dies in the first game. It was clearly brought back to appeal to the old fans and introduce him to new fans. But they managed to completely mess him up because as I mentioned above, walking on the Butcher the first time was terrifying. He's chopping up bodies, he's bigger than the other enemies you've faced, and he's just sitting in a room that you can miss if you're not exploring. It's a scary moment the first time. Now? He's just a boss you rush through to get to the next area. That spirit is missing.

The boss battles changed so much as well. Diablo always had you stumble into the areas you were going to fight a boss. You generally knew where they were but they were just apart of the level. You could retreat and come back to them and they didn't feel disconnected from the level. In Diablo III, they made the bosses much more video game like where they have a few moves and you just dodge them to attack again. In the first two games, you had to think about what you were doing when you encountered them and had to learn their weaknesses, their immunities, and the attack elements. It's the difference between a role-playing experience and a typical arcade experience.

Aside from bosses, they tried to do a few more nostalgia flashbacks with familiar characters, areas (Acts 1 and Acts 2 of Diablo III look like Acts 1 and 2 of Diablo II). They brought back the runewords but somehow made those feel as exciting as skills with no ability to find them. They eventually brought back the Horadric cube which was an actual story element in Diablo II needed to progress. But all of this just felt like things to remind you that yes, you're playing Diablo even though the game is really different.

ISSUE NO. 4: DIFFICULTY

Diablo III is one of the easiest games I've ever played and easy usually gets boring. It isn't until around Act 4 the difficulty picks up. Until then, being surrounded by enemies is just another dopamine hit when you smash your sequenced skills together and knock them all out of the park. The vanilla game was a bit more difficult because they didn't create an infinite numbers difficulty game at this point, so getting to a higher tiered difficulty level was a challenge. But even at the start of Diablo III, you can't just pick a harder difficulty level. They have to spoon feed the challenges to you at a pace they feel you should play at.

I've managed to knock out half a dozen hardcore characters. Hardcore characters are much easier in Diablo III because there's not much challenge in leveling up your characters without dying. You're not running into an issue with immunity attacks. You're copying a build you find online and just playing that until you see those numbers go up to max level. Resist all and skill based gear for maximum damage is all you need for an easy win. You'll die sometimes which is a permanent death of course but it's pretty hard to die in the non-rift areas of Diablo III.

The awesome thing about the previous games is that dying hurt. You had to run back to your body to collect your things, meaning you needed a 2nd set of gear since all of your junk is in a dungeon or field somewhere. You lost gold, something that's completely useless in Diablo III. You even lost experience points, meaning that if you couldn't handle an area, you need to figure out how to overcome it instead of Rambo push through it over and over until success.

Difficulty is important in a gaming. Diablo III lacks this compared to Diablo and Diablo II. It's key to understand how different the difficulty works in Diablo games and why Diablo III pushes an arcade friendly gameplay rather than a role-playing gameplay. Without an risk, the reward feels less accomplishing. It's why so many people enjoy the Souls series. It's not the masochist inside them; it's the feeling of accomplishment from overcoming objective.

ISSUE NO. 5: ARCADE ACTION GAME VS. ACTION ROLE-PLAYING

The entire end game of Diablo III is a lot of quick, actiony fun but it's also a completely different game than Diablo 1 and 2. Both of those games still focused on boss runs and getting better loot but that loot was to increase the difficulty which also changed the entire dynamic of how bosses and enemies worked. In Diablo III, they went with a very simplified approach to appease the casual gamers by introducing the Greater Rifts. They are challenge areas that turn the game into a complicated clicker. In a clicker game, you're just clicking buttons to make numbers go higher and higher for basically as long as you feel like playing. Diablo III managed to base the entire end game off that. Instead of just clicking, you're playing the game with the same exact goal. You just want the number to get higher so you can do it all over again on the next higher difficulty.

This is fun, but its not an improvement on Diablo at all. Because Diablo wasn't a numbers game. That's what a high score, leaderboard type arcade game is. Diablo used to be an role-playing game. The difficulty improvements in the first two games were about making the game harder for the sake of gameplay, not so you can see what level you can get to in your rifts. Diablo III manages to take the end game and turn it into a slot machine. You do the run you're bound to win, then you turn out a jackpot of loot if you manage to beat the time limit. You do this an infinite number of times, increase those big flashy numbers on your screen and hoping that your worthless naked characters gets the loot to go from a 130 Rift to a 131 Rift. It's why Diablo fans that put a lot of time into Diablo II went back to Diablo II. That's not the same type of end game or an improvement on a role-playing game. But it makes for an excellent arcade game with friends.

Looking at Diablo III from a series lens, it's missing so many things that it is known for and to a lesser extent, what fans expected from it. They mostly removed the exploration aspect in place of a much more linear world map. They removed the PVP and put it into a side arena. They removed the ability to collect someone's ear when they died by your hand. They scaled back the multiplayer and removed 8 player runs. They changed the gear so much where getting a rare blue item isn't even important and just another thing to trash. They removed "insane item" finds.

Diablo III did improve on some things. One of my favorite additions is randomly spawned demons that had killed your
friends and hunting them down to avenge your friends death. That's the kind of improvements you'd
like to see in the series, not totally redoing how skills and loot works
in the game to make it easier for the kids. The amount of drastic changes to the gameplay really turned fans of the series off from calling it a true Diablo sequel. Now it would be considered a Diablo-like clone.

None of these changes make Diablo III a bad game. They're totally different games with only slight similarities in gameplay on the surface. You can enjoy both games, but these are the reasons Diablo II has a stronger community than Diablo III. During a new ladder in Diablo III, you might see some people jump into the game to collect the season's loot, but the lasting effects are over. Diablo II has managed to keep it's community even when Diablo III went through a drought of hardly anyone playing online across all of its platforms.

If anything, Diablo III is the Resident Evil 6 of the Resident Evil series. They replaced the dark and abandoned survival horror setting for a much more action packed game within the same universe. They might share the name, but they're not even close to the same game in spirit.

Since it's clear Diablo IV is going in the direction of Diablo III rather than going back a step and making a role-playing game again, some games I'd recommend as more faithful to the original series would be Grim Dawn, Dungeon Siege 1 and II (skip 3), and Titan Quest. Just don't expect these games to hold your hand completely and throw a reward at your feet every minute to keep you coming back.

Stock has been limited, stores can't keep them on the shelves, and then you're contending with scalpers. On top of that, we have Covid-19 limiting everyone's ability to even make the machines fast enough. The current situation isn't ideal for anyone but there's a few potential solutions to get your hands on one without paying scalper prices. These are methods that we've used to get our hands on units in the past few months.

Method One: Use Twitter

Using Twitter is annoying because of all of the crazy radicals on there and bots, but we've been pretty successful obtaining a unit or several from there. If you ignore all other users, there's a particular person that's great to follow and enable notification bells to have a million deals blasted at you all day long.

Wario64

There's a couple of others but if you're paying attention throughout the day, you'll end up getting in line to secure a system quicker. The only problem with his account today versus 5 months ago is there's a lot more people following him now which makes it harder for others to get in on a deal before anyone else.

But if you're going to setup a Twitter account, you can also follow us here.

Method Two: Sit On Store Pages, Refreshing

This is a lot more time consuming but these systems usually pop up once per day. Walmart seems to be the key to victory here as they always get stock and time it. So you'll probably have the best luck there.

Walmart's PS5 Disc Page

Walmart's Xbox Series X Page

Every now and again, Sony's Direct Store has a queue ready to go so if you start seeing them pop anywhere, just check out the links below. The same goes for Microsoft's store with their direct links.

Sony Direct

Microsoft Store

Method Three: Join a Discord Channel or Community

We have a Discord channel. Your friends are on Discord. All gamers are practically there with unique channels. It shouldn't take too long on different game community sites to find a way to keep yourself updated. Like Twitter, Discord is a bunch of users sharing information on chat rooms and it's quicker than waiting on a mainstream game site to post the links. By the time they get there, those systems are gone!

I recommend surfing for channels in a community like NeoGAF (don't worry, they're not longer a bunch of horrible human beings as those people went over to some kind of neo-ultra-communist Great Reset website). Or use a couple of subreddits to find updates or servers to join.

NeoGAF

Game Deals on Reddit

PS5 on Reddit

Good luck!

Fortnite's Trump and Biden Fight Covid-19 Boss In Doom Using Stimulus Checks

Aren't you sick of clickbait titles that use misinformation to generate clicks? Recently on DualShockers, they managed to pull a sneaky claiming Chun-Li was from Fortnite in way that she's known for Fortnite. Any gamer should know Chun-Li is from the Street Fighter series. She's one of they key pillars to the series along with Guile, Blanka and all of the other cast from the movie that made the game popular. And who didn't make her do a spinning bird kick in Street Fighter II and pause when her bubble butt was in full view? Or maybe that last part was just my friends and me.

Rachael Fiddis' article isn't new to clickbait. But it shows why clickbait is so very vital to a website's financials. We all hate and mock them, but your average person is going to click the article if it's a good enough headline especially kids and old people. And if it has anything remotely attractive in their banner be it a person or dollar bills. As shown below, DualShockers hit the attractive female with the great incorrect headline with an article that seems to only be there to promote clicks from the more randy clickers. Chun-Li as a cosplay costume has been around since the dawn of the 90s.

And this isn't to rag on DualShockers. They've got to eat too. Almost every website does this sort of thing. Which major news network doesn't promote misleading click bait headlines? Some even go as far as lying the entire article to promote clicks only to retract the entire article months later like the Washington Posts' big 2020 article. So we're announcing here at Double D-Pads that we will be promoting useless click bait with articles that have nothing to do with the ridiculous headlines!

Today's article isn't even a real article. It's just a great Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode featuring Touch of Satan.
